Waterbed chemicals

Waterbed manufacturers use waterbed chemicals for many reasons. These manufacturers strive to come up with different systems to improve the performance of the water bed.

One of the major complaints from most waterbed users is that a water bed mattress has too much waviness or movement. Thus, waterbed manufacturers invent different systems to control the water movement inside a waterbed mattress. How is this done? Usually, this is done through the use of special fiber products which improve the buoyancy and balance of the water inside the mattress.

For instance, some water beds have hydraulic chambers which control the water waves inside the mattress. Hydraulic water beds are usually composed of polyethylene foam, baffles, buoyant pads and fiber to attain that firmer feel and waveless movement.

Other waterbed mattresses are made up of special fiber mats that absorb the energy of water. These special mats are made out of polyester fiber which is known to inhibit waviness. Thus, when compared with hydraulic beds, waterbeds that contain fiber mats have less buoyancy which gives it a softer feel without any waves or water movement. Some waterbed manufacturers choose to combine both technologies, using hydraulic chambers as well as fibrous mats to achieve the perfect “feel” of a water bed without buoyancy and water movement.

Despite the improvements made on waterbed mattresses however, there have been complaints about the use of toxic chemicals in water beds especially waterbed mattresses which claims to be fireproof. Even old models of water bed mattresses are also known to contain chemicals that may be harmful to one’s health. Examples of chemicals which are being used in waterbed mattresses are Formaldehyde, Boric Acid, Antimony Trioxide, Melamine, Silicon, Decabromodiphenyl Oxide, and Ammonium Polyphosphate. These chemicals are used in order to keep the mattresses flame resistant.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has conducted a study on these chemicals and has proven that such chemicals are absorbed by the body. These toxins are known to have harmful effects in our health and are even known to cause cancer. Thus, a person who spends the whole night sleeping on the water bed is put in great risks from being exposed with these chemicals.

Exposure to these toxins can lead to damages on one’s organs like the liver, kidney, heart and brain, sterility, birth defects and even prenatal mortality. For these serious reasons, the Consumer Product Safety Commission urges the public to buy mattresses which do not contain flame retardant chemicals.

However, this does not mean that all special beds are harmful to the body. A waterbed is very effective in improving one’s blood circulation and preventing body aches and pains. There are in fact, waterbed manufacturers who produce waterbeds which do not contain flame retardant chemicals.

If you would like to purchase a special bed such as a waterbed mattress, it is best to consult a licensed physician, chiropractor, or osteopath to prescribe the right type of bed for you. A licensed doctor knows which type of waterbed does not contain waterbed chemicals which can cause risks to your health.
